Kauai Kalalau Trail Hike by Atlanta Photographer Maryann Davidson Photography

The experience of the trail hike today was magical. I didn’t think I was physically strong enough yet to make it far, but I set out anyway knowing that it’s not always all about the destination. I should write my surgeon and physical therapists thank you notes. With a lot of help and encouragement, the trail was concurred.

  • elevation gain: 2329 feet
  • time: 6 hours, 42 minutes
  • miles walked: 13.73

This was not a stroll – The trail is long and steep with many ups and downs, narrow dirt paths, dangerously slippery mud, dense vegetation, jagged slippery rocks, multiple stream crossings, and sheer drop offs… But if you can make through the difficulties, the rewards are numerous-

Breathtaking views of the Na Pali coastline, giant bamboo forest, a sea of rock cairns, refreshing 300 foot waterfall, helping hands when you need them the most, one of a kind private concert, chance encounters, intensely deep conversations and life altering conclusions.

“Sometimes, you need to step outside, get some air, and remind yourself of who you are and who you want to be.” – unknown
