Keflavik Iceland by Atlanta Photographer Maryann Davidson Photography

Iceland has mountains, volcanoes, geysers, glaciers, rivers, black sandy beaches, farms, and towns of varying sizes, but there isn’t a single Starbucks or McDonald’s in the entire country! Somehow that amazes me. And of all the times I’ve been here, I only noticed today that the Keflavik Iceland International Airport is decorated with Icelandic quotes and sayings. ( Bjork quote on round window overlooking the landscape)Keflavik Iceland by Atlanta Photographer Maryann Davidson Photography International Airport

When speaking with locals, certain phrases befuddle me –

  • (Áfram með smjörið): On with the butter. —-I like this saying since I like butter 🙂 Meaning: Move your butt and keep doing what you’re supposed to be doing.
  • (Það er rúsínan í pylsuendanum): That is the raisin at the end of the sausage. —- Seriously, I’ve heard this several times over the past few days. I finally guessed correctly its meaning: Something that comes as a surprise at the end of something, something extra that wasn’t expected. We would say that’s the cherry on top of the sundae.
  • (Ég mun finna þig í fjöru): I will find you at a beach. —- Ok, I guessed wrong on this meaning: I will get back at you, I’ll get my revenge.
  • (Að leggja höfuðið í bleyti): To lay your head in water —- Meaning: To take some time to think about something, maybe to find a solution to a problem or a new way to do things

Metal artwork overlooking the city of Keflavik Iceland. (I’m the 2nd from the left). I always stay at Hotel Keflavik which is only 5 minutes from the Keflavik International Airport and 15 minutes from the famous Blue Lagoon. The staff is wonderful, always going above and beyond. I enjoy their wonderful breakfast, complete with fresh dessert cakes, which is available starting at 5am. I am not a morning person, but I will wake up for their breakfast. In the lobby,  you can select from a variety of hot beverages: tea, coffee, espresso, and hot chocolate (free of charge). Their dinner restaurant, where you can dine on fresh fish, is an outdoor veranda with a curved glass facade. If you’re lucky, during your evening meal, you can gaze upon the northern lights dancing in the night sky. (below is artwork located outside the restaurant)
